The 2019-2020 awards season kicked into full gear with the Dec. 9 announcement of this years Golden Globe nominees, and numerous LGBT-themed films and television shows, as well as LGBT personnel, were among those recognized by the 93 members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
Among LGBT-themed films competing for Golden Globes, to be presented Jan. 5, are gay director Pedro Almovodar's Pain and Glory and Portrait of a Lady on Fire, from lesbian director Céline Sciamma, which will both compete for best foreign-language film, and Rocketman, a biopic on the life of Elton John, which is up for best comedy or musical motion picture. Other key motion picture nods included Antonio Banderas for Pain and Glory; Beanie Feldstein for Booksmart; Taran Egerton for Rocketman; and Margot Robbie for Bombshell. Elton John's original song "I'm Gonna Love Me Again" from Rocketman was also nominated.
As for small-screen nominations, Netflix's The Politician, starring out actor Ben Platt, received nominations both for best comedy or musical television series and Platt's lead performance. BBC America's Killing Eve received a nomination for best dramatic series, as did co-star Jodie Marie Comer, who plays the assassin Villanelle. Out actor Billy Porter was nominated for his leading role on the FX drama Pose, while Andrew Scott, who is openly gay was named for a supporting role a the limited series for Fleabag.
"Golden Globe nominations for LGBTQ-inclusive films including Rocketman, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, and Pain and Glory, along with television series The Politician and Killing Eve, continue a tradition of recognizing extraordinary talent by the Hollywood Forward Press Association," said Jeremy Blacklow, GLAAD's Director of Entertainment Media, in a Dec. 9 statement. "Well-deserved nominations for several LGBTQ roles, as well as for out actors Billy Porter, Beanie Feldstein, Ben Platt, and Andrew Scott, provide both a reason to celebrate and a reminder for how audiences and critics alike support and applaud authentic LGBTQ storytelling."
