"About Face: Stonewall, Revolt and New Queer Art"being shown at Wrightwood 659, 659 W. Wrightwood Ave.has been extended through Saturday, Aug. 10.
A first-of-its-kind exhibition, "About Face: Stonewall, Revolt and New Queer Art" surveys a global slate of queer art by emerging and established artists who help us better understand each other in an increasingly non-binary world.
"About Face" is curated by Jonathan David Katz, Ph.D., Visiting Professor of Gender, Sexuality and Women's Studies at The University of Pennsylvania and chair of the doctoral program in Visual Studies at the University at Buffalo.
Events related to the exhibit will also take place. On Friday, July 12, at 6 p.m., there will be the lecture "Dark Divisions of Labor: Keijaun Thomas' 'My Last American Dollar." Northwestern University Associate Professor of Performance Studies Joshua Chambers-Letson will provide a meditation on the work of Keijaun Thomas and the labor of hospitality in "My Last American Dollar."
Also, on Friday, July 19, at 6 p.m., there will be a talk by the Dance to the Berdashe artist, Kent Monkman; and on Friday, Aug. 2, at 6 p.m., there will be a closing party with performances and a DJ, joined by exhibiting artists and neighbors.
Participants at the free event are slated to include Brendan Fernandes, artist and current Whitney Biennial participant; Lisa Stone, curator of the Roger Brown Study Collection; Sarita Hernandez, independent curator and Homegrown Curatorial Fellow at the national Museum of Mexican Art; Brave Space Alliance Executive Director LaSaia Wade; and artist and social worker Jessie Mott.
