Another investigation ordered in Smollett case
2019-06-22

In the ongoing saga that is the Jussie Smollett case, things have taken yet another turn as Cook County Judge Michael Toomin ordered a special prosecutor appointed to re-investigate the circumstances of the embattled actor's alleged hoax attack on Jan. 29 in downtown Chicago, The Chicago Tribune reported.

This move marks a step in what promises to be a full-blown look into how Cook County State's Attorney Kim Foxx's office made the controversial decision to drop the charges against Smollett just weeks after he was charged. It also raises the possibility that Smollett could be charged all over again. ( Double jeopardy does not attach since he was not tried initially. )

In addition, Smollett faces a lawsuit from the city seeking to recoup the cost of police overtime for investigating the incident; and his attorneys have been sued for defamation by two brothers who claim Smollett paid them $3,500 to help him stage the attack.

Foxx recused herself from the case in its early stages. However, it has been revealed that her reasons for doing so were different than what she previously stated.
