Chicago to sue Smollett for $130K
2019-04-05

The City of Chicago is planning on suing actor Jussie Smollett after he allegedly concocted an attack against himself.

Outgoing Mayor Rahm Emanuel said the city is suing Smollett to repay the Windy City $130,106 for the costs of the investigation into the attack after the actor refused to pay the bill by the deadline.

However, Smollett's attorney Mark Geragos said that Emanuel, Chicago police Superintendent Eddie Johnson and others will be deposed, The Chicago Tribune reported. "In light of their apparent vested interest in the matter, we are confident that Mayor Emanuel and Superintendent Johnson will not object to providing their testimony under oath," Geragos stated in a letter addressed to the city's corporation counsel.

Smollett was charged with 16 felony counts of disorderly conduct related to the Jan. 29 attack—but in a surprise hearing in late March, Cook County prosecutors abruptly dropped all charges against him, prompting backlash from Johnson and Emanuel.
