The winter season is just around the corner and there are a few things we can do to make out pets more comfortable during the time of year.

Even with global warming, Chicago winters can be brutal for humans as well as for dogs and cats. When walking your dogs in the snow- and salty slush-filled city streets, it is a good idea to use protectants for the paw pads. Paw Pro Oil is made from the same fats that ducks secrete on their feet to keep them waterproof by keeping the skin supple. It is a wax formula for short-haired dogs that works like a charm.

Boots are a good idea, and now there are disposable ones to keep the mud off of your nice carpeting and furniture after a good run outside. Several coat options are available for canines that lack an undercoat ( e.g., pugs, chihuahuas and French bulldogs ) —and these coats are essential when the temperature drops into the teens and below.

When bathing your pet in the winter, use water that is slightly hotter than lukewarm—warmer water will release hair follicles and tweak the undercoat. In addition, always use conditioners every time you bathe your pet. Never use human products because the optimal pH is so different between pet and human shampoos and conditioners.

Finally, dry skin and flaky seborrhea are common occurrences with both cats and dogs once the windows are shut and the heater comes on. There are several good products on the market that have a proper balance between omega-3s and omega-6 fatty acids, and which will give your pet a supple and silky coat. The pure oil forms of these preparations seem to be most effective and should be poured directly on their food. Many of these products can be found at boutique pet supplies stores around town.
