Chicago ( November 3, 2015 )- more than 50 youth and faith leaders joined County Commissioners Robert Steele and Bridget Gainer to rally for an increase in violence prevention funding in the upcoming County budget. The advocates, members of the Reclaim Campaign, announced that they will be pushing to pass an amendment to the proposed budget to increase funding for community-based Restorative Justice violence prevention programs to $2 million from $500,000.
"The lives of young people are being lost needlessly on a daily basis, and the answer is not more policing and arrests," said [name] a leader with FLY ( Fearless Leading by the Youth ). "If black lives matter to the County, then we must increase our investment in Restorative Justice."
The advocates noted that the County budget is over $4 billion dollars and that the increase they are asking for represents less than one tenth of one percent. Moreover, according to President Preckwinkle, the County jail population has dropped by over 2000 people resulting in savings of over $3 million. While still leaving the County spending more than $300 million on the jail. They are calling for some of these savings to be re-invested into community-based programs that save lives and keep people out of the criminal justice system.
"A budget is a moral document," said Reverend Eddie Knox, pastor of Pullman Presbyterian Church and a board member of the Community Renewal Society. "Our communities and churches have seen the life changing power of Restorative Justice, and a budget that spends less than one tenth of one percent to save lives is morally bankrupt."
Commissioners Steele and Gainer pledged their support for these efforts promising to sponsor an amendment to the County budget that is set for a vote on November 18. After the rally, the advocates marched into the hearing to testify to the necessity of increasing violence prevention funds. The Reclaim Campaign is working to meet with all the members of the County Commission to enlist their support. |
