The alumni of Youth Pride Center of the Frankie Foundation and A Church 4 Me teamed up to present the annual Living Legends Black History gala, where influential African Americans in the LGBT community are honored for their accomplishments and contributions.
Friends, family, and supporters gathered in Center on Halsted's third-floor theater for a day of praise, thanks and celebration. Guests enjoyed live performances that included an interpretative dance, song, and spoken word. A Church 4 Me Pastor Kevin L. Downer feels that the collaboration with Youth Pride Center for the event was a great way to show thanks to those who give back to the community.
"I love the working with the Youth Pride Center. I like their variety. They are incredibly talented. There are a lot of negative stereotypes about the youth of today. Youth Pride Center helps to offset those stereotypes with the work they do," Downer said.
The event also honored six individuals from the community for their progress and support: Otis Mack, Sanford Gaylord, Nikki Patin, Anna Deshawn, Otis Richardson and Nicole Scarver. Each honoree received flowers and applause; they all expressed their thanks for the honor.
"This has been a blessing and a humbling experience. I'm feel great to have been honored," says honoree Anna Deshawn.
The event ended in prayer and a reception that welcomed reflection, discussion and, most importantly, new friendships. Veteran member and event emcee Chris Lewis noted the importance of each honoree and recognizes how their support and passion are instrumental to the mission of the Youth Pride Center.
"YPC [ Youth Pride Center ] has been doing this for three years. It's about honoring people in the community because without them, there could be no us," said Lewis.
