Wrexham to play U.S. women in June

Wrexham—the Welsh soccer team bought by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney that's been promoted to the fourth tier of English football for the 2023-24 season—will play Como from Italy's second tier, a U.S. women's side of former national team players, in Group D of a seven-on-seven tournament June 1-4 in Cary, North Carolina, ESPN reported.
Como is led by Heather O'Reilly and a Say Word team paying homage to North Carolina and Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).
Spanish soccer player Cesc Fabregas, former NFL player Chad "Ochocinco" Johnson, former soccer superstars Mia Hamm and Kristine Lilly, and TikTok personality/former soccer player Noah Beck have committed to play in the $1 million, 32-team, winner-take-all event, called The Soccer Tournament, organizers said.
Clint Dempsey, DaMarcus Beasley, Hamm, Michelle Akers, Heather Mitts and John Kerr are among the coaches. Sixteen teams advance to the knockout stage starting June 2; quarterfinals and semifinals are June 3, and the championship is June 4.
