In women's soccer, Sweden dominated the United States 3-0 on July 20 in Tokyo, snapping the Americans' 44-game winning streak in convincing fashion, Yahoo! Sports reported.
The U.S. team entered this event as heavy favorites to take gold. The win streak included seven straight wins to capture the 2019 World Cup.
The USWNT had lost by three goals just four times in its history. This was the worst loss since a 4-0 defeat at the hands of Brazil at the 2007 World Cup.
"We got our asses kicked, didn't we?" Megan Rapinoe asked after the match.
The team faces New Zealand on Saturday, July 24, and Australia on Tuesday, July 27.
