Kayla Sharples' defense and Cassie Miller's first NWSL regular-season clean sheet propelled the Red Stars to a 1-0 victory over the Washington Spirit on July 2 in Leesburg, Virginia.
At the 33-minute mark, Sharples received a cross from a Mallory Pugh corner kick and seemingly scored. However, the score was later changed to an own goal on Washington's Julia Roddar.
Also, Sharples finished the game defensively as the team leader in clearances, with eight; in blocks, with five; two interceptions; and two tackles. She also led the team with 74 touches and went nine of nine in her duels, five of them coming in the air.
The Red Stars' next match is at home Sunday, July 11, at 5 p.m., as they take on the Houston Dash.
