Peter Mavrik's Clubbin' Tip #16: Go out from time to time by yourself. Yes, it's hard to walk into a club alone. And yes, you may not know anyone at all. But you may just find that you enjoy a solo trip somewhere, especially if it's to a club you've never been to. Get to know the bartender/security/anyone who will talk to you. Everyone likes to talk, and in no time you'll meet three or four new people.
The Audiowhores have done another smooth and fantastic Latin flavored track, out on Soulfuric Deep. 'Orillas del Mar ( Borders Of the Sea ) ' is one of those tracks that will get you dancing early in the evening. Susan Montero takes the lead vocals in Spanish ( remember what I said last week? ) and against some jazzy piano, works it out in four different remixes. The main Club Mix and Dub Mix are sultry and spicy at the same time, and both sound great, which is rare for a Club/Dub combo. A little deeper, and a little more break-beat is the Original Vibe mix, my favorite of the lineup. They've also included the spare beats for it as an Instrumental Mix. Definitely a groove you shouldn't miss.
Along the same style, Aston Martinez has a new track called Seduction that's definitely on my late night playlist. Sexy is the word that immediately comes to mind. A whispering songbird says things like 'I desire you' and 'Seduction' over and over, with some other interesting bits and pieces thrown in. So sexy is this track, each one of the remixes has the word Climax in the title: Climax Beats, Extended Climax Club Mix, and my favorite, the Climax Dub. Bongos and tambourines dance with digital noises and those great vocals. This may just be the kind of song that you turn up while you're turning the lights down low. Mmm hmm.
A little more Tech House, at least from all the funky samples peppered through the track, is Blazin' by the Advantage Player on the Sound Consortium label. A mid-tempo early night track, it's a great example of House as mood music. There are two remixes, the Club Mix and the Dub Mix that can get the party started nicely. There's also a funky track on the flip called 'Sweet Potato Pie', a truly Deep Tech track that seems spiritual in nature because of the ethereal vocals that float in and out of the track. It's nothing more than a few loops bound together by a bass kick, but it's the essential Underground sound that's very chic at the moment.
And last but not least, a throw-back to the past. Towa Tei, the DJ behind Dee Lite, has an incredible album called Sound Museum. There's a track called 'Time After Time' that features Amel Larrieux that will blow your mind. The album might be hard to find, but for those who love Amel and Towa's stylistic R&B grooves, the price of the entire CD is worth it for that single track.
With you in 4/4,
Peter
