First, a moment of silence for the close of Red Dog and the legendary Boom Boom Room. Like an old friend who we've all known and loved, it's sad to see it go. But remember, when one door closes, another always opens.
When I've had a long hard week at work, come Saturday night I head to The Office. Yes, you read that right, The Office. In Rockford, of course.
I know some of you Chicago-folk are saying "Rockford!? You went all the way to Rockford!!" Yes, I did. I'd been hearing about The Office for quite a while, so it was time for a visit. With the help of the Saturday night DJ ( thanks Chris! ) who allowed me to hitch a ride, I headed out.
After a lengthy drive from the city that included more toll booths than I have been through in ages, we arrived at an innocent looking
corner building with no windows. There is plenty of parking across the street, but even though it appears that you enter the club on the corner, you don't. Head into the alley to the first door and walk right in. I actually thought we were entering some sort of service door
( I was, after all, with the DJ ) , but it's actually the front door. A quick aside; there is no ATM in the club, so make sure your wallet is filled up before you get there. If not, ask the person at the door where the
nearest one is.
Even though Rockford is a city, The Office feels very inviting in a small-town Southern way. The main level greets you with a large split bar against one wall. Two very handsome and friendly bartenders serve patrons on the first floor all night. There are a couple smaller tables, along with some televisions in the main room. Adjacent to the main room is the dance floor. Coat check is next to the DJ booth on the floor.
Heading up the long flight of stairs in the corner leads you to a performance space, complete with chairs and tables, a nicely sized stage, and a fully stocked bar so you needn't brave the staircase if you are thirsty. They use the stage for local performers, bands, drag shows, or whatever else is around that day.
Out back, the weather was only good enough for a quick romp in the rain. An impressive patio space behind the club seems
perfect for
sipping a
summer cocktail or stealing a kiss from a cute boy.
On the dance floor, DJ Chris Spin brings his eclectic mix of house and energy hits to the nicely laid out dance floor. A myriad of lights keeps the atmosphere as fun as the music all night long.
The crowd around the bar is a great mix of men and women of all ages and colors. I met a lot of great people that were both friendly and fun, with zero attitude.
To sum it all up, if you are in Rockford for the evening, stop in at The Office for a drink. The address is 513 E. State St. Call ( 815 ) 965-0944. You'll be met with friendly faces in a great space with good music.
