Mayor and cyclist Richard M. Daley will help the Windy City Cycling Club celebrate their 10th anniversary with a special message presented by glbt community liaison Bill Greaves.
'Mayor Daley has worked hard over the years to promote bicycling and make Chicago a safer city for cyclists' Greaves said. 'He's also an outspoken advocate for the gay community. So It's no surprise that he is proud pleased to recognize this milestone.'
Greaves will present a letter of congratulations from the mayor at the Windy City Cycling Club's 10th annual Spring Kick Off Party, March 29.
Joining Greaves will be Randy Warren of the Chicagoland Bicycle Federation.
'CBF is proud to celebrate the work that the Windy City Cycling Club has done for bicycling over the past 10 years, especially their increased roll in bicycle advocacy in recent years' Warren said. 'We look forward to continuing to build a strong relationship with the WCCC so that we can support them in their increased efforts for bicycle advocacy.'
Other highlights of the celebration include:
— A performance from the Lakeside Pride Saxophone Ensemble.
— Food from The Handlebar (the newly opened bicycle-themed restaurant).
— Representatives and information from all four brand new Midwest AIDS Rides.
— A slideshow of last season's events running on several monitors throughout the venue.
— Newly acquired video coverage of WCCC member's races in the 2002 Gay Games.
— A 10-candled birthday cake donated by A Taste of Heaven.
Event organizer Jefferson McCarley said 'Whether you enjoy an occasional slow social ride, commute to work by bicycle, are training for the 2006 Gay Games, or are just plain 'bi-cycle' curious, you can not miss this party.'
The event is being sponsored by the Hearty Boys Cafe, 3404 N. Halsted. The Spring Kick Off Party is free and open to the public from 7-10 p.m. on March 29 at @mosphere, 5355 N. Clark in Andersonville. Those that join the WCCC the night of the event will be entered into a drawing for a 'Tower of Prizes,' a six foot tall stack of gifts.
