The exhibit "We Don't Want Your MTV" will run Feb. 10-15 at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago ( SAIC ) Sullivan Galleries, 33 S. State St.
Drawn from Video Data Bank's significant collection, "We Don't Want Your MTV" considers the influence of television on a generation of artists who came of age during the legendary music program's reign, starting in 1981. An exhibition and screening program will feature artists' videos that can be seen as both a response to, and provocation of, mainstream television and commercial music videos, and all that they represent.
Among other things, this exhibition features two newly preserved works by drag activist Glenn Belverio, who will be giving a talk Friday, Feb. 14, 12-1 p.m., at SAIC Sullivan Galleries. Belverio was the producer and co-host of the Manhattan Cable series The Brenda and Glennda Show—a 1990s talk series that took the art of drag out of the nightclubs and into the streets.
