Openly gay U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic James "Wally" Brewster, on Nov. 23, announced that he would be resigning from his post, effective 20 January 2017.
The news came via the Dominican Republic's U.S. Embassy's Twitter account, where Brewster added that he and his husband, Bob Satawake, would move on to "new adventures."
Brewster and Satawake, who both had resided in Chicago, faced heated opposition from religious elements throughout the duration of Brewster's diplomatic post, regularly fielding crude insults from local church officials. Last spring, opponents posted an online position to the White House's website calling for Brewster's removal, but the Obama administration never backed down from its support.
But Brewster told Windy City Times that those voices did not represent most residents of the Dominican Republic, adding that the protestors are "trying to hold on to history and the past, and they're doing everything they can to push people away who are willing to stand up and say, 'This is who we are as a people and we don't want to be represented this way.' …I have great hope for the Dominican Republic, that this is just part of that struggle that we all go through at times." |
