The Women Playing Sports Association ( WPSA ) offers three sports—softball, basketball and volleyball—and continues to expand in each.
"I'm very happy, very content where the league is at right now. The league continues to grow through word of mouth and the ad I placed in the Windy City Times, along with flyers distributed throughout town," said Bobbie Briefman, the league's co-founder. "I can see that more and more women are enjoying the sports that the league provides."
The volleyball league now has nine teams, up from six last season.
Softball has 10 teams for its slow-pitch, 11-inch version, with weekend play starting at 9 a.m.
Basketball was so successful during the winter that, "we possibly are going to add a summer season," Briefman said. "A lot of the women say that they would like to continue playing [ in the summer. ] "
All sports are played at Horner Park on the north side of the city.
"Only time will team what's ahead for this league," Briefman said. "We've tried dodge ball and might return to that.
"The WPSA is a league that shows women that they can still enjoy themselves playing sports. It's not a cut-throat league competitively-speaking."
Jean Miller is the WPSA's other co-founder, and the league has more than 300 members from throughout Chicago and the suburbs, as well as Wisconsin and Indiana.
