Russian seeks refuge
A gay, Jewish Siberian man robbed and jailed during a 106— day journey to flee beatings and persecution at home arrived safely in Canada last week, reports The Toronto Sun.
Denis Dementiev, 20, was welcomed by his sister, Natalia Ganitcheva, and niece Katerina.
With Natalia interpreting, Dementiev talked of the four years of beatings he endured in his home town, after confiding in a college friend that he was gay and his mother was Jewish. Dementiev quit college and caught a train to Moscow, then flew to Amsterdam, then Mexico City. After being mugged and losing his passport and possessions in Tijuana, he jumped a fence at the U.S. border and spent 11 weeks in jail, the Sun reported.
Several gay and Jewish groups raised $1,500 for Dementiev's bail and flew him to Buffalo.
