Vicky Nabors Reflections on a New Year

Happy New Year my Friends!

The years have passed quickly since the Y2K craze—2005 is here, wow! And, time isn't waiting for anyone, so you better get it in gear, and get your 'living on' gurls, cause there's a lot of living to be done.

As we know, life is a continuous cycle of changes. Just when you think you've settled into something, it changes. Unfortunately, a great number of people are uncomfortable with change so they avoid it, or struggle over it. People who avoid change often become stagnant; that's not a good thing. We ( Black wimyn ) must be progressive in 'how' we get our living on; we must constantly seek higher heights for our lives. The first step is easier to take today, more than in the past, because the new millennium has presented us an abundance of new age technologies, unique ideas, and better opportunities. So it doesn't matter what you're into, or how old you are, there's a variety of avenues to travel, and plenty of livin' to be done.

Of course, some older folks ( and young ) may want to simply chill, that's cool too—just don't become too complacent. There's nothing worse than a sistah who just exists, one who does nothing, knows nothing ( except for out-dated stuff ) , and wants nothing because life has beaten her up. Well, it's time to get rejuvenated, my sistahs, in order to discover the wonders that exists outside your safety zones. Find that which holds you back and deal with it via: therapy or diet & exercise, and put those cigarettes down! More womyn than men are dying of lung cancer today than ever before ... inhale a self-help motivational book instead.

And for my younger sistahs, partying, dating games, and the freedom of being 'out' are quite liberating, just don't forget that there's much more living awaiting you, too. Your personal world has many dimensions, and being a lesbian ( butch/stud/femme/other ) is only one of them. Your challenge is to find a healthy balance between partying and growing into a well-versed womyn; attend social gatherings or plays, travel, seek higher education or career training, and get involved in community service ( it can be quite rewarding ) . There are many special-interest communities just waiting for volunteers. The Chicago Black Gays and Lesbians organization ( CBGL ) would love to have a fresh group of young individuals join and eventually take the reigns. And, the Chicago Gay Games committee is actively seeking more than 8,000 volunteers and participants to help set this city on fire, during the summer of 2006, when the world visits our backyard to compete and party. [ See www.gaygameschicago.org . ]

There's an inner child in each of us, but we often get too caught up in the seriousness of living to relax and enjoy what she brings; let her out sometimes, you won't regret it. On the other side, there are sistahs ( old and young ) who may need to contain that devilish child in order to finally develop. I challenge you all to look outside of your normal routines in the new-year to identify new adventures. Let one of your resolutions focus on trying something uniquely different; don't be afraid, you'll either love it or hate it. It's that simple. God Bless you and yours in the New Year.
