Nine urban Boy Scout leaders from some of the country's largest cities have urged national Scout officials to repeal the ban on gays, Gannet News Service reports.
Presidents from Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Minneapolis, San Francisco and Orange County, Calif., proposed the change at the Scouts' annual meeting in early June.
Scouts spokesman Gregg Shields responded to the action by saying, "These council presidents don't necessarily represent their entire councils. Nine dedicated volunteers have that opinion, and we'll take that under consideration."
The leaders represent some of the largest of the 315 Scout councils in the country.
