The Travel Industry of America ( TIA ) awarded the Greater Philadelphia Tourism Marketing Corporation ( GPTMC ) the top award in domestic tourism for the city's Get Your History Straight and Your Nightlife Gay campaign—and it competed against gay and mainstream entries. TIA stated that, 'Philadelphia stands out because it became one of few cities worldwide to promote itself as a gay-friendly destination.'
PlanetOut has given Hyatt Hotels & Resorts its Best Hotel Collection Award for its 'commitment, sensitivity, and appeal to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender ( LGBT ) travelers,' a Hyatt press release stated. Founded in 1992, the awards were previously known as the OUT AND ABOUT Travel Awards.
A research study by Community Marketing, Inc., shows that gay and lesbian travelers take cruises three times as often as heterosexuals. Among other things, the survey revealed that the the median age of the gay cruise traveler is 47 and has a household income of $120,000.
