Amazon's groundbreaking TV series Transparent snagged two awards at the 2015 Golden Globe Awards, which aired on NBC Jan. 11.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Assocation made Transparent the first online show to win Best TV Comedy or Musical. Jill Soloway's showwhich is about an older man/father who makes the transition into becoming a woman, and the reactions and lives of his childrenalso yielded an acting award for Jeffrey Tambor, who dedicated his award to the transgender community, starting his acceptance speech by saying, "This is much bigger than me."
Soloway herself dedicated the best-show victory to and dedicated it to the memory of Leelah Alcorn, a transgender teenager who committed suicide in Ohio in December.
Orange Is the New Black co-star Laverne Cox, who is transgender herself, later tweeted, "Thanks @jillsoloway for the shout out to #LeelahAlcorn. #TransLivesMatter."
Trans actress Alexandra Billings (who lived in Chicago for some time) is part of the Transparent cast.
In another LGBT-related development, out actor Matt Bomer won Best Performance by an Actor in A Supporting Role in a Series, Miniseries Or Motion Picture Made For Television for his role in Larry Kramer's '80s-set AIDS work The Normal Heart. Among others, Bomer thanked his husband and family as well as Kramer.
Taylor Schilling and Uzo Aduba were nominated for their roles in Orange Is the New Black, but did not win.
Kevin Spacey won Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series-Drama for playing bisexual politician Frank Underwood (who is now president).
Among some of the other winners at the awards ceremony, which focuses on film and television, were Julianne Moore (Best Actress in a Motion Picture-Drama, for Still Alice), Eddie Redmayne (Best Actor in a Motion Picture-Drama, for The Theory of Everything), The Grand Budapest Hotel (Best Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy), The Affair (Best TV Series-Drama), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (Best Animated Feature Film) and Chicago actress Gina Rodriguez (Best Actress in a TV Series-Musical or Comedy, for Jane the Virgin).
The Imitation Gamea feature film about the life of late, gay British codebreaker Alan Turing that stars Benedict Cumberbatchwas nominated in several categories, but failed to win.
Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co-hosted the event for the third consecutive yearand have said this was the last time they would do so. Their jokes covered everything from the movie The Interview to the allegations involving Bill Cosby.
