As any current or former college student can attest, going to school involves a major transition as people adjust to everything from the Greek system to intense classes. Add being transgender to the mix and things can become that much more complex.

TransGeneration is an eight-part documentary series that focuses on a year in the life of four transgender college students ( Gabbie, Raci, Lucas and T.J. ) who struggle to make the transition from one gender to the other in the middle of a grueling school year. A sneak peek feature was shown Sept. 9 at Chicago Filmmakers, with cooperation from the Sundance Channel. Gabbie and Raci answered questions after the showing.

Gabbie, born Andrew in 1984, is majoring in computer science at the University of Colorado; her parents paid for her sex reassignment surgery. Raci, born Roy in the Philippines in 1985, attends California State University at Los Angeles but faces additional challenges because she is hearing-impaired. Lucas, born Leah in Oklahoma in 1983, traced his recognition of his male identity to his early days at Smith College. Lastly, T.J. ( born Tamar in 1981 in Lebanon and raised in Cyprus ) is working on a graduate degree at Michigan State University but his gender expression is at odds with his traditional family. The film not only deals with issues from the subjects' perspectives but also of those of family and friends.
