The Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo ( C2E2 ) has announced actor John Barrowman — best known as Captain Jack Harkness in the BBC's Torchwood and Doctor Who — will be appearing at this year's event as a Spotlight Guest. C2E2, from the creators of New York Comic Con, is April 13-15 at McCormick Place in Chicago, IL. The event is a popular culture convention spanning the worlds of comics, movies, television, toys, anime, manga, and games, and John Barrowman is the latest addition to the show's roster of guests. Previously announced comic talent appearing at C2E2 include Adam Hughes, Joe Kubert, Marc Silvestri, Rick Remender, and Scott Snyder. Previously announced entertainment names include Anthony Daniels, Chad Michael Murray, Anne Rice, Charlaine Harris, Chris Hardwick, and Josh Gates.
Barrowman's body of work spans both the UK and US, appearing on British series including Hustle, Hotel Babylon, and his entertainment show, Tonight's The Night, and in the US on programs ranging from Desperate Housewives to Central Park West. He is most known — and has become a pop culture icon — for his portrayal of Captain Jack Harkness. First appearing in 2005 in Doctor Who, Harkness was a rogue anti-hero both equal and opposite Who's altruistic Doctor. Captain Jack proved extremely popular with fans and critics alike, leading to further adventures with The Doctor in subsequent years and the starring role in Doctor Who's adult-oriented spin-off, Torchwood. Torchwood's fourth season, Miracle Day, was a UK and US co-production, airing this past summer on Starz in the USA.
"We're very excited to welcome John Barrowman this year to C2E2," Show Organizer Lance Fensterman said. "Doctor Who has grown into a global phenomenon, and John Barrowman is an actor with a following on both sides of the Atlantic. There's tremendous excitement from the fanboys and fangirls within C2E2's own office, and we know our audience in Chicago will be overjoyed to meet him."
"I'm so excited about C2E2 because it involves two of my favorite things — my US fans and the city of Chicago. We're going to have a great time!" Barrowman said. "C2E2 will be a special kind of homecoming for me. I'm thrilled to be back in one of my favorite cities in the world, and I'm so happy at long last to be able to spend some time with my US fans."
Barrowman was interviewed in Windy City Times last July: www.windycitymediagroup.com/lgbt/Out-actor-John-Barrowman-Back-in-the-Torchwood-saddle/32898.html
John Barrowman will be appearing at C2E2 on Saturday and Sunday. He'll be signing autographs and be participating in a panel discussion.
