People will be hard-pressed to find a gayer moment than the opening number of the 63rd Annual Tony Awards, which honored the best of Broadway June 7 at New York City's Radio City Music Hall and aired on CBS.
The start of the show featured a montage of shows and performances from entertainers including Dolly Parton, Sir Elton John and Liza Minnelli.
In addition, out actor Neil Patrick Harris hosted the program. Indeed, as he sang when the event ended, "This show could not be any gayer if Liza was named mayor and Elton John took flight" Harris kept his bits short but entertaining, including a moment when he was onstage eating sushi—which was seemingly a poke at actor Jeremy Piven, who quit Speed-the-Plow because of what he said was mercury poisoning from eating too much fish.
As for awards, it was Billy Elliot's night. The production picked up 10 awards, including Best Musical and Best Actor in a Musical ( which went to the triumvirate of teenage boys—David Alvarez, Trent Kowalik and Kiril Kulish—who played the title role ) . John, who composed the show's score, thanked audience members for attending his show. Regarding plays, God of Carnage won three awards: Best Play, Best Director ( Matthew Warchus ) and Best Actress ( Marcia Gay Harden ) . Hair won Best Revival.
Liza Minnelli received the Tony for special theatrical event for her one-woman show Liza's at the Palace. In addition, the legendary Angela Lansbury won her fifth award for her role in Blithe Spirit; she won her first 43 years ago for Mame, according to the New York Times. |
