Gay playwright/author/activist Larry Kramer will receive the Isabelle Stevenson Award, a non-competitive Tony Award. The Stevenson honor is given to "an individual from the theatre community who has made a substantial contribution of volunteered time and effort on behalf of one or more humanitarian, social service or charitable organizations, regardless of whether such organizations relate to the theatre," according to the Tonys.
The celebrated British import Matilda was runner-up to Kinky Boots with 12. Other productions that with multiple nominations include revivals of Pippin (10) and Golden Boy (eight) and a revised version of Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella (nine).
Actors who received nods included Nathan Lane, Tony Shalhoub, Judith Light, Holland Taylor (for Ann, a tribute to Ann Richards), Cicely Tyson, Billy Porter, Judith Ivey, Laurie Metcalf, David Hyde Pierce, Tracy Letts, Tom Sturridge and Tom Hanks.
Among the notable omissions was Bette Midler, widely considered a leading-actress contender for John Logan's one-woman play I'll Eat You Last: A Chat with Sue Mengers.
The Tony Awards will be presented at Radio City Music Hall June 9.
