The previous two national tours of The Color Purple that visited the Windy City featured Michelle Williams of Destiny's Child fame as Shug Avery in 2007, then American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino as Celie in 2009. Well now, the 2005 Broadway musical based on Alice Walker's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is back again, this time with Tony and Grammy winner Jennifer Holliday ( Dreamgirls ) in the role of Sofia. The Color Purple plays only three performances at 3 and 8 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 16, at the Arie Crown Theater at McCormick Place, 2301 S. Lake Shore Drive. Tickets are $44.50-$57.50; call 800-745-3000 or visit www.ariecrown.com . Photo of Holliday by Jerry Nunn

A Christmas Carol, Goodman Theatre, Nov. 23-Dec. 28. After two months of acting his lungs out in King Lear, Larry Yando will go right into Dickens' most strenuous role with barely a week's rest in between. Scrooge himself couldn't be a more demanding slave-driver! MSB
The Lieutenant of Inishmore, AstonRep Theatre at Raven Theatre, through Nov. 23. It's Martin McDonagh's bloodiest play, but how better to deplore violence than by reducing it to looney-tunes through sheer Tarantino-esque excess in a cozy little auditorium where you can hear a cat meow? MSB
The Submission, Pride Films and Plays at Apollo Studio, through Nov. 25. Everybody emerges wiser in this smart comedy after a young playwright's plan to market his play under a fictional identity goes inevitably awry. MSB
Titanic, Griffin Theatre at Theater Wit, through Dec. 7. This beautifully sung and intimate production makes a very strong case for Maury Yeston's five-time Tony Award-winning musical based upon the 1912 maritime disaster to be staged in a small theater rather than a big Broadway barn. SCM
