Critics' Picks
American Buffalo, Mary-Arrchie Theatre Company at Angel Island, extended through March 20. With the wrecking ball only months away, this 30-year-old Chicago theater company returns to its roots for one last all-star stand. MSB
Far from Heaven, Porchlight Music Theatre, through March 13. A musical version of the film about a 1957 suburban housewife who pushes envelopes when her sitcom-perfect life melts down. The emotions are true and the lush, jazz-infused score is beautifully sung and staged. JA
The Flick, Steppenwolf Theatre, through May 8. Annie Baker's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama is a slow-burn study of movie theater employees whose love of cinema contrasts to the tedium of their dead-end jobs. SCM
Twelfth Night, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, through March 13. Tricks! Gags! Music! Pizza! Even some Shakespeare! Almost everyone knows this play, so London's Filter Theatre offers a stripped-down, bare-bones, 90-minute clown version that cuts characters and most of the text but retains all the high spirits.
