Gay men love their gadgets. Evidence of this fact is found scattered throughout a gay man's daily routine, the GPS device clinging to the dashboard of his car, the new iphone G3 he is intently checking between meetings or while playing it nonchalant at the bar, and of course throughout his home from his personal computer to his home entertainment system.
As new gadgets are launched daily, it becomes tedious sifting through the numerous review sites and postings on each new product to find the next must have item, but a new site purposes to simplify the search for the next 'it' product.
Launched on Aug. 1, GayGadget.com is a new on-line gadget review site aimed at gay men. Serge Gojkovich, founder of GayGadget.com, explained, 'There are plenty of tech sites out there where you can find out about the latest gadget, but what I found, and some of my friends also confirmed, is that we would go to these gadget sites and look through all this stuff and there was a lot that we didn't really find interesting. So, I thought it would be a really good idea to come up with a site where we could use our inner gay gadget, sort of gaydar, and really just highlight the ones that we think will be interesting to us and the gay market.'
Currently, new postings are added to the site every other day, with the goal being to have a fresh post everyday. The reviews cover a variety of product types including home, office and leisure use gadgets.
Mobile phones and lap top computers remain the most cruised gadgets. 'I do think the Blackberry Bold is going to be a hit. There's a touch screen of the Blackberry that's coming out that's going to give the iphone some really good competition. I think there's going to be a huge influx of small laptops in the next 6 months to a year. I think the Airbook put a lot of other companies on notice. You're also going to see more net books, and the reason for that is because many more programs are just going to run over the Internet, so the amount of programs you are going to run from your personal computer is going to decrease,' Gojkovich noted.
Although the Web site is marketed specifically to gay men, Gojkovich said, 'Straight and bi guys ( and even lesbians ) can also love the stuff we highlight.' His hope is that attention to the web site will open up the electronic industry to the fact that the gay market is both substantial and setting the trends for the must have gadgets.
'I would really like to see the site looked upon as a leader as far as what gadgets are standing out over other gadgets. That it sort of allows the electronic industry to know that gay people are a significant market, especially gay men, and they need to be advertised to, need to be marketed to. They're just not really doing it.'
