Everything's coming up roses for actress Louise Pitre in her stunning turn as Mama Rose in Chicago Shakespeare Theatre's current production of Gypsy. My mom even asked me, "Was she as good as Ethel Merman or Rosalind Russell?" Let's just say that Mama Nancy would be floored by this Mama Rose, whose expert mix of brass and vulnerability nailed this iconic role. And the quick costume changes on Jessica Rush's titular ( tee hee! ) stripper at the end of the show will have you reeling. Catch Gypsy at Chicago Shakespeare ( if you possibly can ) before it closes this weekend!
But I'm not all theater and arts, folks. I also enjoy singing in my underdrawers. To wit, I enjoyed another Mardi Gras undie-oke at Jackhammer. The tie-dyed onesie made another appearance and, if I may say so, I pulled it off, so much so that Arben insisted on being photographed next to it. Really brings out his eyes, no?
Those NVRLND kids always thrill with their unmistakable mix of lighting, fashion, DJs and filth. The Queen of Hearts party at Hydrate was true to form. And the new layout of Hydrate makes so much more sense. Great job, guys. Can't wait to see what they do with that new space. I vote for an all-night laundromat. They can call it Delicates.
Anthony certainly put in the work this St. Pat's weekend ( while I was deep in seclusion, thank you very much ). I'm not sure I could survive a ride on the gAy List bus personally, but my drankin' skills have declined in years past. But for those still in tip-top tippler shape, I say Bus On!
And let's all wish a happy 45th anniversary to The Baton Show Lounge, without whom drag would never have achieved the degree of legitimacy that it has, not only in Chicago, but all over the world. Lots of history there, folks. Learn it.
