Bea Arthur
I had been planning the cover of this week's issue for years, but I never wanted to run it.
I remember, as a child of 8 or 9, sneaking up into my grandmother's bedroom to watch Maude on channel 60. The show's liberal bent was a bit too controversial for my religious, conservative household. I, on the other hand, craved a different point of view and it was this desire to expand my political outlook that first introduced me to the rapier comic talents of Beatrice Arthur.
Later in the go-go decade known as the '80s, I became hooked on The Golden Girls. The Italian mother/daughter dynamic portrayed by Bea and the late Estelle Getty drew close comparison to my very own Italian mother and grandmother, who raised me jointly. Strange that I gravitated toward Maude in order to escape my family and that I eventually would enjoy watching The Golden Girls with my mother, laughing along to Bea's acid tongue.
So this past weekend, after helping my boyfriend move in to my place ( and YAY for me, by the way! ) , we hooked up his computer and checked to see if the connection was working. One click and the terrible news was splashed across the screen.
Life ( and by extension, death ) is shaped by change or, more specifically, one's ability to adapt and grow in the light of change. I've lost an inspiration to the heavens, but gained a life partner to share my nights. One door closes...
Club Studio 69
The West Side just a little more spicy with the addition of Sunday nights at Club Studio 69. Though the name may be a bit cumbersome, the cocktails and partial nudity more than tip the balance to the bright side. Just a quick jaunt to 2366 N. Neva ( Mapquest it, bitch! ) Call 773-824-7912 to reserve a super luxe booth for yourself and eight of your sexiest compadres. Enjoy.
Cattle Call
Come to the grand opening of Andersonville's newest ( and moo-est ) nightspot, Cattle Call. May 15. Cowboy up and come on in!
Finally, some drag droppings on the Halsted sidewalk.
Scott Free
Catch my friend Scott Free at this year's Alt Q Music Festival, Saturday, May 9 at Old Town School of Folk Music, 4544 N. Lincoln Ave. I remember when it was called Queer As Folk, which gives you an idea of how long it's been going on. This year's entertainment includes Tret Fure, Edie Carey, Sweet Hello, Stella and the Heat Birds and Gregg Shapiro: A first-class bill if ever I've seen one. Do your duty and support local queer music and spoken word. Is that too much to ask?Catch my friend Scott Free at this year's Alt Q Music Festival, Saturday, May 9 at Old Town School of Folk Music, 4544 N.
