The Jackson Sun reports that Dorothy Bond has resigned as the principal of Haywood High School in Haywood, Tennessee after reports surfaced that she said gay students are "not on God's path" and threatened to expel them if they publicly showed affection for members of the same sex. The ACLU also received reports that Bond not only made discriminatory remarks about LGBT people, but also told students that "life is over" for girls who became pregnant.
"Haywood County School District's swift action makes it clear that they do not condone the type of harassment and targeted discrimination that was taking place at the high school," said Hedy Weinberg, executive director of the ACLU of Tennessee. "We applaud the Haywood County School District for affirming students' right to be who they are and to be free from bullying by school leadership."
"No school official should use her authority to make students feel unwelcome in their own school," said Amanda Goad, staff attorney for the ACLU LGBT Project. "The public outcry over the reported actions by the former principal of Haywood High demonstrates that this kind of discrimination won't be tolerated, from future principals at Haywood or any other school leader."
