On July 12, the nominations for the 74th Emmy Awards were announced.
Succession earned the most nominations of any show, earning a total of 25 nods, including one for outstanding drama, as well as outstanding lead actor nominations for Brian Cox and Jeremy Strong, CNN noted.
Ted Lasso led the comedy category, earning 20 nominations, including one for outstanding comedy series.
White Lotus was a favorite in the limited series category, earning a total of 20 nominations and eight nominations in supporting acting categories.
Speaking of acting, Zendaya made history as she landed her second Emmy nom for her turn on HBO's teen drama, becoming the youngest ever two-time acting nominee, according to Deadline. The actress, 25, is also now the youngest producing nom, as an exec producer on the series, which scored in Outstanding Drama.
Outstanding Drama Series nods went to Better Call Saul, Euphoria, Ozark, Severance, Squid Game, Stranger Things, Succession and Yellowjackets. Outstanding Comedy Series nominations went to Abbott Elementary, Barry, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Hacks, The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Only Murders in the Building, Ted Lasso and What We Do in the Shadows.
Regarding the LGBTQ+ demographic, there were several nominees. Among them, Jodie Comer and Sandra Oh (both of Killing Eve), Zendaya and Reese Witherspoon (The Morning Show) were all nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series category for portraying LGBTQ+ characters. Out lesbian Kate McKinnon (Saturday Night Live) and bisexual actress Hannah Einbinder (Hacks) both received nods for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
Out actress Sarah Paulson received a nod for Impeachment: American Crime Story while gay actor Murray Bartlett was nominated for The White Lotus.
In addition, several productions with LGBTQ+ characters and/or non-nominated actors received nods, including Hacks. RuPaul's Drag Race was nominated for Outstanding Reality/Competition Series; it'll compete against The Amazing Race, Top Chef, Lizzo's Watch Out for the Big Grrrls, Nailed It! and The Voice.
However, Dave Chappelle's controversial comedy special The Closer, which includes anti-transgender jokes, received an Emmy nomination in the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Variety Special (Pre-Recorded) category, Deadline also noted. He will compete against Adele: One Night Only, Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return To Hogwarts, Norm Macdonald: Nothing Special and One Last Time: An Evening With Tony Bennett & Lady Gaga.
According to TheWrap, some of the snubs included Selena Gomez (left out while Only Murders in the Building co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short received Lead Actor nods), the series Yellowstone (zero nominations), and black-ish and This Is Us (shut out of the nominations in their last seasons).
The ceremony will take place Sept. 12.
