In 1985, food trends were started that have lasted until today. Let's take a look back …
Frozen foods rose in popularity and NASA had given us the microwave to help us out. The start of 1980, no one had a microwave, and by 1989, no kitchen was complete without one. The Preppies had no time for cooking the old-fashioned way and we saw all kinds of inventions to brown food and crisp our bacon in the micro. Gross.
Please don't forget the burger wars, everyone was trying to be on top. Clara Peller simply asked 'Where's the beef?' and increased Wendy's sales by 31 percent. But who really is a winner with fast food? Grody to the max!
Sushi was referred to as 'bait' in the movie Valley Girl, but look at it now. In Chicago, there is a Sushi restaurant on every corner. Give me the Godzilla platter!
In the '80s, we introduced designer pizza. Pick the ingredients and we will do the rest, totally tubular.
Weird Al sang 'I'm Fat' and faster than Pac Man could eat a pellet, America gave up Tab to Diet Coke, which still thrived in 2005. I hardly remember the cola wars. Barf out.
Our restaurants ended the avant-garde and changed to remember the food our mother used to make, like macaroni and cheese along with meatloaf. Awesome.
Before you say 'gag me with a spoon' at '80s cuisine, without even thinking about it, you may be at dinner drinking some 'red, red wine,' eating your hand-tossed pizza and jamming to Madonna. Who cut the cheese?
