Openly lesbian U.S. Rep. Tammy Baldwin, D-Wis., has announced her official bid for the U.S. Senate, CNN.com reported.
In a three-minute online video, she compared herself to retiring Democratic Sen. Herb Kohl and former Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold. Feingold lost his re-election bid last year.
Baldwin said, "The fact is we have to create jobs and get the economy back on track, and it's time politicians looked out for seniors, working families and the middle class instead of protecting the profits of big oil and Wall Street."
She added, "The middle class is getting slammed and no one seems to be listening. Well, I'm listening." She also pledged to fight to bring troops home from Afghanistan and redirect resources to creating jobs and rebuilding roads and bridges that are in disrepair; to help small businesses get access to the capital they need to grow; and to cut the debt in a principled way so that all pay their fair share, according to a press release.
The Victory Fund issued a supporting statement saying in part, "Victory's support for Tammy goes all the way back to the first time we endorsed her in a 1992 campaign for the Wisconsin legislature. ... For years she's been a brave voice on Capitol Hill, standing up to discrimination and speaking out both for her constituents and LGBT Americans."
The Human Rights Campaign ( HRC ) also endorsed Baldwin's run. "Tammy Baldwin's candidacy for the U.S. Senate is monumental for both the state of Wisconsin and the country's LGBT community," said HRC President Joe Solmonese. "Tammy has proven herself as an effective legislator over the course of her 13 years in Congress and this campaign will be a top priority for the Human Rights Campaign." |
