Omar Sharif Jr. may have a well-known name ( since he was named after his actor grandfather, who is in such films as Doctor Zhivago ), but he has also carved his own path as an activist, becoming the national spokesman and strategic giving officer for GLAAD.
Sharif shared a little bit of himself in an email interview before stopping in Chicago Saturday, April 19, for the GLAAD Hatter Brunch.
GLAAD: How did you get involved with GLAAD?
Omar Sharif Jr.: GLAAD came to my rescue when I came out in Egypt. They helped me put my story forward in a way I that I could be proud of and helped me rebuild a new life in America. I realized then that GLAAD truly is the voice of equality globally, giving a voice and a face to our community around the world. As a spokesperson and strategic giving officer, I am lucky to be reminded daily of the power of GLAAD's mission through the work that we do nationally in influential LGBT communities like Chicago.
GLAAD: In your opinion, what is the biggest challenge the LGBT movement is facing?
Omar Sharif Jr.:Globally, we face many serious issuesbut in the United States, we still have a way to go. When eight out of 10 LGBT youth report being bullied in schools, that's an epidemic. That's 3.2 million kids being tormented for being who they are, and we have to change that.
GLAAD: The GLAAD Hatter Brunch is now on its third year. Can you tell us a little more about the event?
Omar Sharif Jr.:GLAAD Hatter is a fantastic brunch event lead by the amazing GLAAD Leadership Council in Chicago. Besides the hilarious hats and great food, it's a chance for GLAAD to flex its presence in Chicago and allow people to get involved. It's so important that we have opportunities for people to be involved no matter where they are. As a massive LGBT hub, Chicago is one of our most important cities to push for equality.
GLAAD: What would you like to see in Chicago?
Omar Sharif Jr.:I would love to see a day with temperatures over 50, but in all seriousness I am a big fan of Boystown and have been a couple of times; however, this trip I'm dying to explore the Andersonville neighborhood.
The GLAAD Hatter Brunch will be Saturday, April 19, at Taverna 750, 750 W. Cornelia Ave., 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Tickets are $75; visit www.glaad.org/glaadhatter . |
