The Windy City Times 'Gay and Lesbian History Month' series continues, with an essay by Martina Navratilova and a feature on Frank Kameny.
Gay and Lesbian History Month began as a direct result of the lack of gay and lesbian history in textbooks. In 1994, Rodney Wilson, a high school teacher in Missouri, along with other leaders and educators, including Chicagoans Kevin Boyer and Paul Varnell, started a campaign to educate the general public about the history of the GLBT community. In a project initiated by the Philadelphia Gay News, and joined by other newspapers around the U.S., this month we present a series of profiles and essays on GL History Month.
