The City of Chicago Commission on Human Relations Advisory Councils on Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Issues and on Asian Affairs join with Silk Road Theatre Project to sponsor a staged reading of A Language of Their Own, by Chay Yew, as part of Unity Month, announced Clarence N. Wood, CCHR Chair. The performance will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21 at The Chicago Temple, First United Methodist Church, 77 W. Washington St. It will be followed by a reception and discussion with Chay Yew. Both performance and reception are free and open to the public.
A Language of Their Own is a meditation on the nature of love, desire, sexuality, and self-definition as four gay men (three Asian and one Caucasian) come together and drift apart in a series of interconnecting stories. The New York Post says, 'Forty years ago, John Osborne in Look Back in Anger first drew attention to the secret codes of lovers. Yew's beautifully written play now suggests that the dots, dashes, and pauses of that code, the words and gestures, their establishment and sometimes their erosion and final collapse, are a metaphor for the course of the affair, indeed an allegory of love. It's a thought, and exquisitely expressed.'
Chay Yew is a critically acclaimed gay, Singaporean-Chinese-American playwright. Yew is director of the Mark Taper Forum's Asian Theatre Workshop and resident director at East West Players in Los Angeles.
Silk Road Theatre Project is dedicated to introducing Chicago audiences to playwrights of Asian, Middle Eastern, and Mediterranean descent. For more information call Malik Gillani or Jamil Khoury at 312-236-6881 (voice) or 312-744-1088 (TTY).
