The United Church of Christ's ( UCC's ) official blessing of same-sex marriages does not bind its individual parishes, but the leader of St.Paul's in Barrington supports it, according to the Pioneer Press.
The Rev. Jeanne Hanson, pastor of St. Paul's UCC, said that the decision did not surprise her because the denomination had been thinking it over for about 30 years. Her associate pastor, the Rev. Mark Gregory, attended the General Synod in Atlanta July 4 and voted in favor of the measure.
Hanson told the Press that the same-sex marriage issue has long been a topic of conversation among parishioners at her church, which is home to approximately 240 members, including one woman who is openly gay. Some parishioners support the measure while others left the church well before the decision was finalized. Others are what the minister calls 'quietly resistant.'
Among the arguments opponents make is that there is no evidence of the Bible approving homosexuality, let alone the marriage of gays. However, Hanson believes people have to look more closely at teachings of acceptance. 'Jesus talked a great deal about not judging,' she told the Press.
The UCC denomination comprises 6,000 congregations and 1.3 million members. |
