A joint study released by Rand Corporation and Oregon State University revealed that some African Americans believe that government scientists created AIDS to control or eradicate communities, the Washington Post reported.
The study's authors said that this belief can hurt efforts to stop the spread of the disease among Blacks. African Americans account for about 13 percent of the population, according to the Census Bureau; however, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Blacks account for 50 percent of new HIV infections in the country.
Almost half of the 500 Blacks surveyed said that HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, is man-made. More than one quarter said they believed that AIDS was created in a government laboratory, and 12 percent believed it was made and spread by the CIA. However, 75 percent said they believe medical and public health agencies are working to halt the spread of the disease in Black communities.
The study appears in the Feb. 1 issue of the Journal of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndromes. The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development supported the research.
Reminder: Feb. 7 is National African-American HIV/AIDS Awareness and Information Day. |
