Thousands of Members Worked from Coast-To-Coast on Behalf of the Democratic Ticket
Washington, DC - Tonight, the National Stonewall Democrats congratulate Senators Barack Obama and Joe Biden for their historic victory. The national voice of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender ( LGBT ) and allied Democrats mobilized its members and more than 90 chapters across the country to work on behalf of Obama/Biden and the entire Democratic ticket in the months leading up to the election.
"Stonewall Democrats across this country served as the backbone of our community's efforts to elect Barack Obama and Joe Biden," said Jon Hoadley, Executive Director. "In small towns and urban centers we met our neighbors at their doors, talked with strangers over the phone, stood with voters in lines drenched in rain. We did everything we could to ensure the change our nation needs starts today and will be continued tomorrow by our grassroots advocates. The Obama/Biden ticket proudly supported many pro-equality positions like their endorsement of a fully-inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act, equal enforcement of hate crimes law, the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and the expansion of spousal benefits to the partners of federal employees. We are proud to have worked alongside this campaign."
For over two years, Stonewall Democrats used its grassroots network to help shape the Democratic field into the most accountable and tested group of candidates in the history of the Democratic Party. From the living rooms of New Hampshire to the greens of historically Black college campuses, Stonewall Democrats organized its members to meet with candidates to discuss issues that are crucial to LGBT Americans. This included national trainings in the early-voting states of New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina and Stonewall Democrats town hall events with Democratic presidential campaigns in states like Ohio and Texas.
National Stonewall Democrats is the national voice of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allied Democrats, with more than 90 local chapters across the nation. Stonewall Democrats works to elect more pro-equality Democrats - regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity - and to improve the Democratic Party on issues important to LGBT Democrats.
