Steele Becomes Cook County's First Woman President

On Aug. 1, the Cook County Board of Commissioners swore in its first woman president. Commissioner Bobbie Steele was elected unanimously by commissioners to replace John Stroger, who is recovering from a massive stroke. Steele will hold the president's seat through Dec. 4, when either Democratic Alderman Todd Stroger or Republican Commission Tony Peraica will assume the duties.
Steele becomes Cook County's first woman president since it was created in 1831. She will also be running for re-election as 2nd District commissioner in the November election.
Among Steele's first moves as hiring veteran troubleshooter Al Pritchett as chief of staff. |
