At the 61st Annual 2007 Tony Awards, held on June 10 at Radio City Music Hall in New York City, The Coast of Utopia and Spring Awakening won the honors for best play and best musical, respectively.
Utopia, a nine-hour drama, won seven Tonys. Spring, however, nabbed eight, including awards for its score and direction.
The acclaimed musical Grey Gardens also did well, with lead actress Christine Ebersole winning for playing two characters: Edith Bouvier Beale and her daughter, Edie. Mary Louise Wilson took the Best Featured Actress in a Musical award for playing Big Edie Beale.
Of course, the gay community was well-represented. Recently out actor David Hyde Pierce won Best Actor in a Musical while openly gay Michael Mayer received the Tony for Best Direction of a Musical for Spring Awakening. Also, openly gay choreographer Bill T. Jones prevailed for Spring Awakening.
In addition, out producer Tom Hulce spoke when Spring won Best Musical honors.
Presenters included out actors Neil Patrick Harris and Harvey Fierstein.
