In May 2004, London is set to host what is expected to be one of the largest sporting events in the United Kingdom during 2004. The Bingham Cup, probably the world's largest international amateur rugby union tournament, will take place at Esher RFC.

This tournament, named in memory of Mark Kendall Bingham a hero of the tragic events of 9/11, 2001, is aimed at the gay, lesbian and bisexual community with the hope that in its own way it will help break down the barriers of prejudice and discrimination found in present day sport while at the same time providing a competitive outlet for gay men, lesbians and bisexuals who have a passion for playing rugby.

With the full support of the RFU and its President, Robert Horner; the Mayor of London; the Department of Culture, Media and Sport and Visit Britain, Visit London, Marketing Manchester, Brighton & Hove, the Metropolitan Police as well as blue chip organizations such as United Airlines, and Thistle Hotels, this event will see more than 27 teams, more than 350 players and over 2,000 spectators from around the globe converge of London for three days of exciting and fiercely competitive match play.
