On Sept. 6, the Chicago Sky were hoping to wrap up their semifinal series with the Connecticut Sun with a win.
However, the Sun had other plans.
In a game Chicago never led, Connecticut crushed the Sky 104-80 to set up a winner-takes-all Game 5 in Chicago on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. (The game will air on ESPN2.)
Kahleah Copper had 16 points to lead Chicago, who seemed a step slow throughout the match-up. A high point was that the Sky's Candace Parker passed Tamika Catchings for number one on the all-time playoffs rebounds list, with 599.
"There were just too many details that we missed," Sky player Allie Quigley said, per The Chicago Tribune. "We weren't doing what we were supposed to do. We missed people behind us and let them go back door.
"We just had too many moments when we just weren't there and weren't ready. We just weren't focused."
Whoever wins will face the top-seeded Las Vegas Aces, who defeated the Seattle Storm (and ended the career of WNBA legend Sue Bird) 97-92 to win their series three games to one.
At Wrigley Field on Sept. 6, the Chicago Cubs (57-78) defeated the Cincinnati Reds (53-80) 9-3.
Hayden Wesneski allowed two hits over five shutout innings of relief to win his major league debut, and the Chicago Cubs took advantage of 11 walks, ESPN noted. Cincinnati's 11 walks were its most since Aug. 8, 2018.
Cincinnati (53-80), which had four hits, is two losses from ensuring a losing record. However, the Cubs are not far behind.
The teams continue their series Wed., Sept. 7.
On the West Coast on Sept. 6, the Chicago White Sox (68-68) fell to the Seattle Mariners (77-59) 3-0.
The South Siders have lost two of three and dropped three games behind first-place Cleveland in the AL Central, also trailing Minnesota by 1 1/2 games, per ESPN.
Seattle has allowed only three runs or fewer in nine consecutive games, tying June 1-11, 2009, for the second-longest streak in team history behind 13 straight in 2014.
The teams will clash again on Wed., Sept. 7.
