Safe in the 'Hood

In reaction to a growing trend of street violence and thefts, Howard Brown Health Center and the Chicago Police 23rd District have teamed to create an upcoming grassroots awareness campaign, aimed primarily at Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood.

A street team of HBHC staff, Chicago police representatives, and community members distributed information during late-night hours when the area sees most of its foot traffic, hoping to remind revelers to be mindful of their safety as the evening unfolds.

Neighborhood concerns have been heightened amidst an apparent increase in street crime, including sidewalk muggings and violence associated with encounters commonly referred to as 'one-night stands.'

Last March, the murder of Lakeview resident Kevin Clewer provoked added focus on the need for residents to act wisely and cautiously. Another recent murder has again caused concern.

In many crimes, the incidents go unreported—a tendency the Chicago Police would like to reverse. Call the police at ( 312 ) 744-0064.
