Julianna Pena achieved a huge upset Dec. 11, when she made Amanda Nunes submit to claim the women's bantamweight title in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 269 co-main event at Las Vegas' T-Mobile Arena, according to USA Today.
Pena (11-4 mixed martial arts [MMA], 7-2 UFC) landed good shots on Nunes (21-5 MMA, 14-2 UFC) in the second round before securing the takedown, taking the back and finishing the job with a rear-naked choke in the second round.
Pena became the eighth fighter in UFC history to win a season of "The Ultimate Fighter" reality series and a UFC belt. Nunes won the title at UFC 200 in 2016 by crushing Pena's mentor and close friend, Miesha Tate, Yahoo! Sports noted.
"I did everything tonight," Nunes said. "I trained very hard for this fight. … Congrats to Julianna."
Nunes is married to fellow UFC fighter Nina Nunes, a strawweight fighter. On Sept. 24, 2020, Nina gave birth to the couple's first child. |
