CMSA Awards
Chicago Metropolitan Sports Association had a busy weekend.
The Thursday and Friday Night Bowling Leagues kicked off their 2003-2004 seasons; Charlie's Cougars celebrated their first-place title in the Gay World Series C Division; Beach Volleyball held their playoffs and end-of-season Bar-B-Q; the Men's Softball League ended their season with an awards ceremony; and the 4th Annual Senior Cup was held.
Next weekend promises to be just a exciting with the Men's and Women's Flag Football Leagues hitting the fields.
Plaques and medals for season champs and playoff winners were distributed at the Men's Softball League awards ceremony. The annual James R. Brodie Award was also handed out. Jim started playing softball in MSA in the early 1980s. He was a tough competitor and strongly believed in fairness and good sportsmanship. He was cheerful, witty and loved to make people laugh. Before Jim died in 1987 a trust was set up to establish an award to be given each season to a player that the league felt reflected 'Good competition, Sportsmanship and Team Play.'
This year's recipient was Lori Condie. In addition to the award, the league surprised Condie with a playful video of 'her in action' and a secret guest to celebrate her achievement ... her mom. There wasn't a dry eye in the room.
First and second place for regular season play were as follows:
Div 1: First - Spin Devils;
Second - Sidetrack Surge
Div 2: First - Hunter's;
Second - Charlie's/Carlton Cougars
Div 3: First - Buddies';
Second - Spin
Div 4: First - Jackhammer;

The International Gay & Lesbian Snowsports Association (IGLSA) has announced that Emmy Award-winning composer Laura Karpman, and Playgirl centerfold Scott Merritt, are its latest additions to its high-profile patron membership.
Laura Karpman, a keen skier, and composer on Steven Spielberg's recent mini-series Taken, has joined the IGLSA as a patron to help the organization lift its profile and inspire the organization's general membership. 'The only two things I can do well are ski and compose music,' joked the four-time Emmy Award recipient.
Also joining the IGLSA is Scott Merritt, a top fashion model who was recently voted by the readers of Playgirl magazine to be their '30th Anniversary Man' centerfold model. Merritt, who was not at the time openly gay, has since put to rest rumors about his sexuality in the gay press.
Merritt told gay and lesbian news magazine The Advocate, 'I don't want to hide anymore, period ... . I'm gay. They [Playgirl] didn't ask me if I was straight, and I didn't lie.'
Merritt, who was born and raised in Ontario Canada, first took up skiing and snow-shoeing during his teen years.
