WASHINGTON — Today, U.S. Representative Mike Quigley ( IL-05 ), Vice-Chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus and founding member of its Transgender Equality Task Force, was announced in the Caucus' bipartisan membership list for the 115th Congress. Updated membership, which nearly doubled since the start of the last Congress, includes a strong majority of all House Democrats.
"We have a moral obligation to promote equality, justice, and opportunity for all, while ensuring that adherence to these key American values does not waver based on sexual orientation or gender identity," said Rep. Quigley. "Unfortunately, in just the first month of the new Administration, the White House has already considered issuing executive orders that would undermine our democracy by weakening protections shielding LGBT Americans from discrimination, something that the majority of Americans do not support. Our country is at its best when all voices are heard, listened to, and respected, and I look forward to continuing to serve as Vice Chair in the LGBT Equality Caucus, which plays a vital role in helping us achieve that goal. Together, we must hold President Trump and those in Congress accountable and ensure that no American is denied the pursuit of life, liberty and happiness."
Since his election to Congress in 2009, Rep. Quigley has been a tireless advocate for the LGBT community. At the start of the 114th Congress, Rep. Quigley was named a Vice-Chair of the Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus. He has hosted numerous Equality Caucus briefings around the "economics of equality," which explore economic equality in the LGBT community and how Congress can better address this critical issue. In January 2015, he became an original cosponsor of the International Human Rights Defense Act. He also continues to lead the efforts in Congress to end theoutdated and discriminatory blood ban that requires gay men to abstain from sex for 12 months in order to qualify as a donor.
The Congressional LGBT Equality Caucus, which was established in the U.S. House of Representatives in June 2008, serves as a resource for Members of Congress and their staff and works toward the extension of equal rights, the repeal of discriminatory laws, the elimination of hate-motivated violence, and the improved health and well-being for all regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity and expression.
