Queen pardons gay mathematician Alan Turing

Under the little-known Royal Prerogative of Mercy, Queen Elizabeth II has formally pardoned famed British mathematician and computer scientist Alan Turing nearly six decades after his death, according to LGBTQ Nation.
Turing—whom many considered to be the father of computer science and artificial intelligence, and who was most famous for his work on breaking the German Enigma codes during World War II—was chemically castrated after being convicted in 1952 of "gross indecency" with another man. At age 41, Turing died of cyanide poisoning on June 7, 1954, in what was ruled a suicide.
Victor Salvo—executive director of The Legacy Project, the world's only outdoor museum walk and youth education dedicated to combating anti-gay bullying by celebrating LGBT contributions to history—emailed Windy City Times that "The story of the outrageous injustice done to Alan Turing —one of the most important figures of the 20th century—was the lightning bolt that turned the decades-old Legacy Walk from a pipe dream into an obsession.
"In fact, our plaque on Halsted [Street in Chicago's Boystown] is the only plaque in the world that actually says the man was gay and what happened to him because of it. That he has finally been 'pardoned' by Queen Elizabeth is certainly long overdue.
"Pardoned or not, the conviction and chemical castration that drove Turing to suicide is a scandal which Great Britain and the royals will never erase with the mere stroke of a pen; severing financial ties to Uganda and a British boycott of Socchi in Turing's honor would be a good place to start. Uganda's bullshit law and Russia's anti-LGBT tyranny are just two examples of what we have yet to confront in this world.
