Quare Life is a comedy web series centering the lives of a group of Chicago queer women of color. Michelle Jones (Ambria Sylvain) is living the Black American dream. She has a nice home, a girlfriend, and a foot on the rung of professional ascension. When her marriage proposal is rejected and work contract ends; Michelle must rely on her close friends, twin brother, and formerly homophobic mother for support. The series follows Michelle's climb from professional and personal rock bottom; and each of her friends' support in the process as well as their own negotiations of sex, love, and relationships in the contemporary segregated city of Chicago. They deal with gender labels, sexual orientations, and class divisions in Chicago's queer communities of color.
Quare Life combines the sisterhood of 'Girlfriends,' queer framily-focus of 'The L Word' and quirkiness of 'Awkward Black Girl' to highlight relationships between queer women of color and their friends and family. The series is the brainchild of Chicago-based writer M Shelly Conner. She also curates the dapperqueer lifestyle website DapperVista.com and is founder and Executive Director of Quare Square Collective, Inc., a 501(c)3 nonprofit for queer artists of color. Conner credits fellow scholar/artist E. Patrick Johnson for coining the term 'quare.' Johnson writes, "Quare foregrounds the ways in which lesbians, bisexuals, gays and transgender people of color come to sexual knowledge." For Conner, the term embodies her experiences as queer woman of color and child of the Great Migration.
Quare Life stars Ambria Sylvain, Tara Smith, Dominica Strong and transgender comedian Dina Nina Martinez. Producer Myra Boone and director Jessica King head an experienced crew with numerous combined film credits. Quare Life's pilot is scheduled to premiere this summer with the rest of the series debuting as part of OpenTV's 2018 lineup and follows in the success of its predecessors You're So Talented, Brown Girls and Brujos.
A crowdfund campaign runs until May 21, 2017 on www.seedandspark.com/fund/quare-life. For updates on production and screenings, follow Quare Life on Instagram and Facebook as well as the dappervista.com website . |
